VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its participation in the Virginia Beach Blast Tournament by splitting two games Saturday.
The Hornets (8-6) dropped the opener, 5-4, to Penn College, before defeating Keuka (New York) 12-3 in the second game of the day.
Coach Marlena Kotynski's club finished the Blast with a 3-1 record.
Maryann Hollen had two hits and three runs batted in with her second hit a two-run home run.
Hollen also went deep in the Penn College contest and now has four home runs on the season.
Megan Stout and Megan Wilk also had two hits each in the win over the Wolves.
Shenandoah scored two runs in the first, one in the second, five in the fifth and two in the seventh to complete the rout.
Elizabeth Everette (3-0) was the winning pitcher. She allowed one unearned run on four hits in 3 2/3 innings of work while also striking out five.
SU gave up four runs in the first versus Penn College, but battled back to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth only to see the Wildcats score the game-winner on a hit batsman in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Shenandoah had the tying run 60 feet from home plate only to see the 'Cats escape with a flyout to center and a lineout to left.
Henley had three of the Hornets 10 hits with Sammy Amateau getting two hits and Hollen hitting a solo home run in the second.
Katherine Seidl took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk against four strikeouts in the complete game showing.
Shenandoah returns home on Monday with a 4:30 non-league doubleheader versus the University of Rochester (N.Y.).
