WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team completed its 2012 season Friday evening by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from York (Pa.).
The Hornets (24-17) won game one 8-0 in six innings before completing the sweep with an 8-7, 10-inning victory in the nightcap.
Senior Brooke Over (14-12) was the winner in both halves of the double-dip and held the Spartans (13-23) to just three hits in the opener.
Over struck out seven, walked one and allowed just one hit after the first inning of game one.
YCP had four runners reach scoring position, but Over retired the final 13 hitters in order to put the finishing touches on her school record 20th career shutout.
Shenandoah scored seven runs on six hits in the third inning of game one with Denise Mitchell leading off the frame with a single through the left side and then driving in the final run with a triple to right center.
McCabe, who matched Mitchell with three hits in the contest, ended the game with a single to center to score Heather Sink from third base.
SU led 5-2 heading into the sixth inning of game two only to see York score three runs on three hits off of game two starter Jordan Wolford.
Hornets coach Marlena Kotynski called on Over to snuff out the rally, but the Spartans were able to tie the contest as pinch hitter Christina Andrulat had a two-run single to right.
The two teams set up the 10th by trading single runs (both scored by the placed runner) in the eighth and being held scoreless in the ninth.
Sink drove in the game-winning run in the 10th by lacing a single to center to plate Coble from second.
Coble had tied the game one batter earlier with a double into left to score Mitchell from first.
Mitchell, the leadoff batter of the frame, reached as she beat out a sacrifice bunt for a hit on a play that saw Lane (the placed runner) cut down at the plate after trying to score on a blobbled ball at first base.
Over allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in 5.0 innings of work.
Shenandoah opens its 2013 season in mid-February.
