Softball Ends Run

BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team saw its reign as USA South Conference champions end Saturday with a 6-4 loss to Greensboro College in the loser's bracket semi-finals of the 2012 USA South Conference Tournament.

The Pride (20-18) advance into an elimination game against Ferrum, who eliminated Methodist with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (22-16) now has a 13-day break before completing its season with a non-league doubleheader against York (Pa.).

GC scored four runs in the first off of senior Brooke Over (12-12) to take a lead it would not relinquish, although SU had the tying run on base third, fifth and sixth innings.

Greensboro scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth on a Brittany Teer sacrifice fly. Teer plated Kelsey Burkett, who reached on an infield single.

After falling behind 4-0, SU cut the deficit in half with two runs in the third on an RBI triple by Denise Mitchell followed by an RBI single from Brittany Guepe.

Guepe, who finished 3 for 4, also had an RBI single in the sixth.

Over allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

She also struck out two.

Mitchell backed up Guepe with a 2 for 4 performance.
