After Averett (11-16, 3-6 USA South) was a 7-0 winner in the opener, Shenandoah (14-8, 5-5) came back with an 8-7 victory in the nightcap.
The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two before SU tied it with three runs in the top of the second.
Averett again had an answer, scoring three times in the bottom of the second, before the Hornets finally seized the lead for good with a five-run fourth.
McCabe tied the score at 6-6 with a bases loaded double to score Mitchell, Guepe and Sink before Wolford drew a walk to continue the rally.
Coble then put SU on top to stay with a triple into the gap in right center to plate both McCabe and Wolford.
Wolford (5-1) earned the win after allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks.
Senior Brooke Over (6-6), who was the losing pitcher in game one, earned the save in the nightcap.
Over registered her only strikeout by getting Brooke Hensley swinging to end the contest.
Averett had runners on second and third when Hensley, who had homered in her previous at-bat, stepped to the plate.
Guepe, Sink, McCabe, Wolford and Coble, the Hornets 2-6 hitters, all had two hits in the victory.
AU scored one run in the second and six in the fifth to win game one 7-0.
Guepe, McCabe, Wolford and Denise Mitchell each had one hit for Shenandoah in that contest.
The Hornets are back in action on Sunday at noon in a non-league home doubleheader against York (Pa.).
