FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its 2012 season Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Mary Washington.
The Hornets (2-0) were 3-0 winners over UMW (2-4) in the opening game before completing the sweep with a 7-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Senior Brooke Over (1-0) tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener.
Over struck out seven and walked just three in the complete game victory. She retired eight in a row from the fourth through seventh innings.
Junior Jordan Wolford provided Over with all of the offense she would need by driving in Shatora Lane with a triple to right in the fourth.
Lane had led off the frame with a single to center.
Morgan Coble led the offense with two hits and an RBI in four at-bats.
Lauren McCabe had the Hornets final RBI in the contest.
Shenandoah banged out 10 hits in the nightcap, including two each from Coble, Wolford and freshman Lizzy Martin.
Coble and Wolford also drove in a pair of runs each.
Wolford, who came on for classmate Amanda Litwin to start the second, earned the win in the pitching circle.
Wolford allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks in 6.0 innings. She also struck out seven.
Coble had the eventual game-winning RBI with a double to left in the fifth.
Shenandoah is off until taking on Baruch (N.Y.) and Salisbury on Friday on day one of the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast.
