Softball Splits at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team kept itself in position for a top three seed at the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament by splitting a doubleheader at Methodist Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (21-12, 11-6 USA South) was a 5-3 winner in the opener before Methodist came back to take game two 4-0.

The Monarchs (21-17, 12-6) are one-half game ahead of SU in the standings right now, but SU can claim that No. 3 spot with a win over Meredith tomorrow at noon.

The Hornets and Avenging Angels are scheduled for that noon contest as a makeup from a rainout last Saturday.

Shenandoah was held to just two hits, by Denise Mitchell and Morgan Coble, in today's second game.

MU scored all four of its runs in the third.

In the opener, Methodist took the early lead with a single run in the second before the Hornets answered with a run of their own in the fifth.

The two teams then went to extra innings with each scoring two times in the eighth.

Shenandoah got the winning runs in the ninth when placed runner Heather Sink was sacrificed to third and then scored on wild pitch. Mitchell followed with a triple down the right field line and came home one batter later when Coble singled up the middle.

Jolisa Jones and Renoula Jones but had three hits in the victory.

Junior Brooke Over went all nine innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks.

Over struck out 12.
