Softball Sweeps Eagles
WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team ran its winning streak to six games Thursday evening with 5-3 and 4-3 non-league victories over Mary Washington.
Shenandoah (17-7) led throughout game one while it needed a late rally in the nightcap to sweep the Eagles (20-11).
In that second contest, the Hornets found themselves down 3-0 after UMW scored single runs in the third thru fifth innings.
SU, which had a run called back when leadoff hitter Katie Haskins was called out on appeal following a fly to center by Catherine Beuerle, scored three runs in the sixth before getting the game-winner in the seventh.
Junior Katie Bundrick, who started her collegiate career at Mary Washington, led off the frame with a double to left center and was sacrificed to third by Renoula Jones.
Following a Haskins groundout to short, sophomore Cat Pruiett laced a hard single between short and third to score Bundrick with the clinching run.
UMW third baseman Taylor Saulman was able to knock down Pruiett's grounder and shortstop Kaitlin Petrell picked it up, but Pruiett beat the throw to first easily.
The late-inning heroics made a winner of Haskins (9-2). Pitching in game two Thursday night instead of her normal game one spot because of class considerations, Haskins scattered seven hits and three walks in the complete game victory.
Liz Crowe (0-2), who bailed starter Nicole Foster out of a two-on, no out spot in the fifth, took the loss. She allowed all four runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of work.
In game one, Shenandoah combined a three-run third with single runs in the fourth and fifth to win the 5-3 decision.
Freshman Brooke Over (5-4) allowed three runs on nine hits and five walks in 6.1 innings before turning it over to Haskins to close out the contest.
Haskins had to face just one batter to record her first save since the 2007 season as pinch runner Ashley Davenport was doubled off of second base on Cathy Hull's flyout to deep centerfield.
Davenport was running on contact and found herself halfway between third and home when SU centerfielder Jess Robertson caught the ball up against the fence. Robertson casually relayed the ball back to Bundrick, who tapped on second base to end the contest.
Freshman Marlee Camplese had the big hit offensively with a pinch-hit, two-run single to right in the third to score both Bundrick and Robertson.
Kirsten Rowell (15-3) was the game one loser. She allowed the five runs (three earned) on eight hits and six walks.
