DELAWARE, Ohio - Shenandoah University had three softball student-athletes earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors in selections announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Seniors Catherine Beuerle and Katie Haskins are repeat selections to the All-District first team while junior Katie Bundrick was named to the second team.
To be eligible for Academic All-District or All-America, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves on their team and have at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Nominees are then voted on by CoSIDA members within one of eight national districts. The first team district honorees then move on to the national ballot, from which CoSIDA Academic All-America committee members select first, second and third team Academic All-America teams.
Beuerle's repeat selection means she has the chance to become Shenandoah's first two-time first team Academic All-America. In 2008, she was named to the first team after leading the Hornets to a school-record 30 overall wins and a USA South Conference regular season title.
Teddy Rogers '08 is the school's only two-time Academic
All-America. He was a third team honoree in 2007 and a first team
selection last year.
This spring, Beuerle was named All-USA South for the third consecutive year as SU again won 30 contests and made its second appearance in the USA South Tournament in the past three seasons.
Beuerle is a 3.8 student in her second year in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She had a 4.0 GPA as an undergrad.
Haskins, who like Beuerle is in her second year of PT school, maintains a 4.0 GPA in that program after posting a 3.91 GPA as an undergrad. Haskins earned All-USA South honors six times during her career.
Haskins was named as the league's Pitcher of the Year in both 2008 and 2009 as she won a combined 34 contests in the two seasons. This year, Haskins was 16-4 from the pitching circle and all four of her losses came to nationally ranked teams.
Two weeks ago, Haskins was named as the department's female athlete of the year and Beuerle as the female student-athlete of the year for the second straight year.
Bundrick earns her first ESPN academic honor after transferring from Mary Washington in the fall of 2007. Bundrick is a 3.80 student as a Business Administration/Accounting double major and earned honorable mention All-USA South honors this spring.
