Hornets Sting Softball

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Host Lynchburg College used a game-two rally Wednesday afternoon to complete a non-league doubleheader softball sweep over Shenandoah.

LC (33-6-1), the nation's No. 15 ranked team, won game two 8-7 in eight innings after taking the opener 2-0.

Shenandoah (28-13) led the nightcap 6-2 heading into the seventh, but saw LC hit two home runs before tying the contest with a two-out, unearned run. The hosts then won it on a walk-off home run with one out in the eighth.

Junior Lauren Wall and sophomore Ashley Plaugher had given SU that four-run lead heading into Lynchburg's final at-bat by hitting a three-run HR in the fourth and a two-run dinger in the sixth, respectively.

SU Hornets starter Brooke Over (9-7) took the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 14 hits and four walks. She struck out six in her 7.1 innings of work.

In the opener, the LC Hornets had six hits dispatch Shenandoah in a battle of two of the region's ranked teams.

In addition to its No. 15 team national rank, Lynchburg is second in the Atlantic Region while SU is No. 7 in the region.

The hosts got all of the offense it would need in the second when Rachel Gallagher reach on a one-out single down the left-field line, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Taylor Walker's double to center.

Three innings later, pinch hitter Meagan Fredenberg gave the hosts an insurance run with a leadoff HR off of SU Hornets senior Katie Haskins (16-5).

Haskins struck out six and walked just three in the loss. All five of her losses this season are to ranked opponents.

Plaugher had two of the visitors five game-one hits.

Shenandoah completes its regular season Thursday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Frostburg State.
