Softball Secures Second Seed
SALEM, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team secured the
No. 2 seed at next week's USA South Conference Tournament by
splitting a pair of games with Greensboro College Saturday
afternoon at the Moyer Complex.
The Hornets (25-9, 14-4 USA South) won game one 7-1 before the
Pride (19-14, 13-4) rallied for a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
Game one was a resumption of a suspended contest from March 29 - SU
led 2-0 in the top of the third inning when the game was called due
to rain. Saturday, the Hornets added two more runs in the third and
three in the fifth to coast to the seed-clinching victory.
Senior Katie Haskins (14-2) didn't need the extra support as she
struck out 11 and scattered three hits in earning her 12th straight
win.
Freshman Jesse Khoshavi-Heins was 3 for 4 with three runs batted in
on a two-run single in the third and an infield hit in the
fifth.
A four-run fifth gave coach Marlena Kotynski's club a 4-3 lead in
the nightcap, but GC rallied with four runs in the seventh off of
freshman Brooke Over (8-6) to salvage the split.
Junior Katie Bundrick led the Hornets at the plate with two hits in
three at-bats.
Shenandoah is off until the first round of the conference
tournament on Friday. The Hornets will play the winner of the No. 7
Ferrum vs No. 10 Mary Baldwin in the third game of the tournament.
