Softball Finishes with Sweep
WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team celebrated Senior Day Thursday afternoon by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from Frostburg State.
Shenandoah (30-13) equals last season's win total with the 9-0 and 5-0 wins over the Bobcats (22-13).
In the opener, freshman Brooke Over (10-7) tossed a one-hitter as the Hornets needed just 57 minutes to polish off the five-inning win.
Over struck out seven and walked just one; Brooke Tapman broke up Over's no-hit bid with a two-out single to right center in the fourth.
Freshman Jesse Khosravi-Heins had the game-winning RBI on a first-inning sacrifice fly to center. Senior Catherine Beuerle, who led off the SU first with a single to left, scored that first run.
Coach Marlena Kotynski's team then ended things early with an eight-run fourth. The Hornets sent 12 women to the plate with Lauren Wall, Anna Struhar and Marlee Camplese all driving in multiple runs with a single and a pair of doubles, respectively.
Senior Katie Haskins (17-5) was dominant in game two - she struck out 12 and allowed only a fifth-inning single to post her fourth one-hitter of the season.
With Thursday's games being the final regular season games of the
season, Haskins finishes her career as the program leader in
victories with 52. All five of her losses this spring came to teams
ranked in the nation's top 25.
Haskins also scored the game-winning run in the nightcap as she led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and then scored when FSU catcher Lindsey Freitag threw away a relay following a wild pitch on a third strike to Beuerle.
