Softball Opens with Win

BURLINGTON, N.C. - No. 2 Shenandoah University opened up its play in the 2009 USA South Conference softball Tournament with a 2-0 win over seventh-seeded Ferrum College Friday afternoon at Springwood Park.

Senior Katie Haskins tossed a complete-game five-hitter to put the Hornets (26-9) into the winner's bracket semi-finals Saturday afternoon at noon against third-seeded Greensboro.

The Pride had earlier advanced with a 2-0 win over Meredith.

Haskins (15-2) win her 13th straight decision by striking out nine and scattering three walks and five hits in the complete game.

The shutout is the fifth of the year for the two-time USA South Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Haskins got all of the offense she would need in the bottom of the second when designated player Marlee Camplese started a two-hit rally.

Camplese led off with an infield single and then was replaced by Renoula Jones. Jones moved to second on Lauren Wall's single to center, stole third and came home on Katie Bundrick's RBI groundout to second.

Bundrick also drove in the insurance run in the fourth when she plated Ashley Plaugher with a single.

Junior Lauren Wall had two of the Hornets six hits on the day.
