Softball Sweeps Panthers

FERRUM, Va. - Shenandoah University battled both the cold and a tough Ferrum College club Tuesday night in a USA South Conference softball sweep over the host Panthers.

Shenandoah (22-8, 11-3 USA South) kept its hopes alive for the league's regular season title with 5-2 and 7-6 wins over the Panthers (15-15, 7-7).

SU has four league games left, at home on Friday and against Greensboro Saturday at the Moyer Complex in Salem. With four wins in those games and a Methodist sweep over CNU, Shenandoah and the Captains will tie for the regular season title.

In Tuesday's game one, senior Katie Haskins improved to 12-2 by scattering seven hits in the complete game victory. She struck out eight and walked just two as she won her 10th straight decision.

Haskins got the job done at the plate as well - she was 2 for 3 while Marlee Camplese and Jesse Khosravi-Heins both drove in two runs.

Camplese also drove in what proved to be the game-winning run when she doubled in Cat Beuerle in the third. Beuerle had led off the frame by being hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second.

Heins played the hero in the nightcap with a seventh inning solo home run to secure the one-run victory.

Heading into the sixth, SU found itself trailing 6-2 after Ferrum took control of the contest with a five-run fourth and one more in the fifth.

Coach Marlena Kotynski's team got itself back into it with four runs on three hits in that sixth inning - sophomore Cat Pruiett had the big hit with a two-out, three-run single to score Jess Robertson, Ashley Plaugher and Heins.

Freshman Brooke Over (7-5) was the winner after matching Haskins with eight strikeouts in a complete game outing.
