Two Earn Academic All-America Honors

DELAWARE, Ohio - Shenandoah University had two student-athletes earn first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors in selections announced Wednesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Catherine Beuerle and Katie Haskins, both four-year members of the Hornets softball program, were picked at catcher and pitcher, respectively.

To be selected as Academic All-America, student-athletes must have a GPA of at least a 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and be a starter or important reserve on their team.

Nominees are then voted on at the district level by CoSIDA members and the first team All-District nominees move on to the national ballot for consideration by the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee.

This is the second straight first team Academic All-America nod for Beuerle. She becomes the first SU student-athlete to be named first team Academic All-America twice in a career and the two selections brings Shenandoah's total to eight Academic All-America honorees in the past three years.

Katie Haskins Beuerle, who had a 4.0 GPA as an undergrad, and Haskins (3.91) both just completed their second year in the SU Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Haskins has a perfect 4.0 GPA in four semesters of that program while Beuerle maintains a 3.8 graduate GPA.

This spring, Beuerle was named All-USA South for the third consecutive year as SU again won 30 contests and made its second appearance in the USA South Tournament in the past three seasons.

Haskins was named as the league's Pitcher of the Year in both 2008 and 2009 as she won a combined 34 contests in the two seasons. A six-time All-USA South honoree (three pitching, two utility, one outfield), Haskins was 16-4 from the pitching circle this spring and all four of her losses came to nationally ranked teams.

Haskins was named as the department's female athlete of the year and Beuerle as the female student-athlete of the year for the second straight year at the Senior Awards Dinner in April.
