Hubbard Tabbed for Tennis Position

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Wayne Edwards announced Wednesday the appointment of Larry Hubbard as the Hornets new head men's and women's tennis coach.

Hubbard, who comes to Shenandoah from his position of Director of Tennis at Ivy Hill Golf and Tennis Club in Forest, Virginia, has over 20 years of intercollegiate coaching experience. He takes over the position from Kimberly Scruton, who resigned in April to take a faculty position at Methodist University.

He will also serve the department as the Director of Athletics Advancement.

"We are extremely fortunate to have attracted Larry to fill this important position," Dr. Edwards said. "His intercollegiate coaching experience, work with the USTA and his involvement within the tennis private sector will serve him well here at Shenandoah.

"Larry comes highly recommended by people I know and trust, and his role with both coaching and fundraising will contribute to the enhancement of the department, its student-athletes and the university as a whole."

From 2000-2005, Hubbard was the head men's and women's tennis coach at Liberty University after coming to the Division I institution in 1999 to be the head men's coach.

In his final five years with the Flames, Hubbard also held administrative positions within the department, including assisting with fundraising initiatives, and rose to an Associate Athletics Director position in 2003.

The Richmond, Virginia native moved to UNC-Asheville in January 2006 as interim head tennis coach and was named to the permanent position the following June.

Hubbard has also had various additional positions within the tennis community in the past 10 years including working with Total Tennis Training in South Carolina and with the USTA in junior development for southwest Virginia.

"This is an incredible opportunity to be part of something very special here at Shenandoah University," Hubbard said. "It is an honor and privilege to be associated with student-athletes at the Division III level.  The timing is perfect to build the tennis program as President Fitzsimmons builds the university.

"I am very grateful to Dr. Edwards for his endorsement and this unique chance to be part of a new era of athletic excellence here at Shenandoah."

Hubbard, who was a USILA All-America in lacrosse at the University of Maryland and a member of the Terps 1973 national championship squad in that sport, coached college lacrosse as an assistant at the University of Delaware and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County before coming the head men's lacrosse coach at Lynchburg College in 1985.

Hubbard begins his full-time duties in August.
