VIRGINIA BEACH – Shenandoah University opened up play at the 2012 Virginia Wesleyan Tournament with a 2-0 men's soccer loss to former USA South Conference rival Christopher Newport University Friday afternoon.
Shenandoah (1-3) battled the Captains (1-1-1) tight, holding CNU off the board for the first 57:49 before Michael Breske scored from 15 yards out directly off of a corner kick.
Christopher Newport continued to pelt the Hornets goal, but keeper James Dutcher kept SU in it by making a career-high 17 saves on 36 shots.
Dutcher's 17 saves ties Brian Garretson '09 for the second-best performance in program history. Garretson had 17 stops versus Greensboro on November 4, 2008 while Tom Malinosky made 21 saves versus Greensboro on October 2, 1999.
CNU iced the victory on a Hunter Hartnett goal in the 80th minute.
The Captains had a 36-1 advantage in shots, including 19-1 on goal.
Freshman Emilio Altamirano had that lone shot in the 41st minute.
Shenandoah completes play in the tournament by taking on Marymount in a 5:00 Saturday contest.
