Catholic Steals Men's Soccer Win
WINCHESTER, Va. - Catholic University was nearly doubled up in shots, but made the most of its opportunities in a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory Wednesday night over Shenandoah on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
The Hornets (0-3-1) outshot their visitors 13-7, including 8-4 in the second half, but came away without the result after Nick Sylvester netted the game-winner in the 85th minute for Catholic (3-1).
Sylvester's tally, on a blast from 20 yards out, was the only goal scored in the second half of play.
Kevin Duffy scored the opening goal of the game for the visitors before Adam Aldinger took a feed from Karim Kamara in the 36th minute to tie it for SU.
In between Aldinger's goal and Sylvester's game-winner, the Hornets continually peppered the Cardinals goal.
Shenandoah had three shots on goal in this time, including a pair breakaways by Aldinger.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, CUA keeper Thomas O'Leary was on the spot all three times, making crucial saves that kept his side in the contest.
O'Leary stopped Aldinger on the two one-on-ones with diving stops, and his defense helped prevent at least two other opportunities from developing into scoring chances.
SU is back in action Friday night with a 7 p.m. non-league contest against Frostburg State.
