CNU Sinks Men's Soccer
WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Christopher Newport University kept
its USA South Conference men's soccer perfect record intact with a
4-0 victory Wednesday night over Shenandoah.
CNU (10-3-1, 3-0 USA South) scored all of the goals it would need
on an Clif Kipper to Andrew Carver tally at 23:37. The goal was the
first of three for Carver on the night and came just 53 seconds
after he and Kipper checked into the contest.
Shenandoah (0-10-2, 0-2) had an excellent chance to score in the
ninth minute, but Captains keeper Matt Tengs was able to come up
with a point-blank save on Liberatus
Mwagombe.
Five minutes after Tengs kept the game scoreless, SU found itself
in a deficit situation after midfielder Aaron
McGuiness drew a red card for taking a CNU player down on a
breakaway. The Captains were unable score on the ensuing direct
kick, but the damage was done for the hosts as Shenandoah played
the remainder of the contest down a man.
Winston Mattheisen scored the visitors second goal in the 38th
minute with Carver finishing off his hat trick with goals in the
39th and 79th minutes.
CNU outshot Shenandoah 17-3 and took six of the game's nine
corners.
