WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University earned its first men's lacrosse victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 16-4 non-league win over Bethany (W. Va.).
Shenandoah (1-13) scored nine unanswered from the 6:51 mark of the second until 14:00 remained in the game to key the win over the first-year Bison (1-11).
Bethany had taken a 2-1 on a Kyle Arrington goal at 6:59 of the second, but SU had a quick answer.
Kenney May won the ensuing faceoff and fed Sean Mack on the doorstep to knot the game at 2-2 before Shenandoah would regain the lead just 45 seconds later.
Tre Brinson fed Mac Hedrick with the goal that put SU up to stay and SU had all of the momentum on its side.
The Hornets closed out the half with two more goals, the last by Mack with just 12 seconds remaining, before scoring all five goals in the third period.
Mack, who led all scorers with four goals, was one eight SU players to score at least one time Saturday afternoon.
The 16 goals is the most scored by the team this season.
Shenandoah outshot the Bison 45-26, dominated in groundballs 59-34 and won 13 of 23 faceoffs.
SU keepers Andrew Fleischmann, Brett Holmes, Austin Clark and Tyler Quinn combined for 11 saves. Fleischmann had seven of those stops in the first 45 minutes.
The win snaps a 20-loss losing streak for Shenandoah dating back to March 27, 2010.
The Hornets complete their 2011 season next Saturday at home against Marywood.
