Yeomen Down Men's Lax
BAY VILLAGE, Ohio - Host Oberlin College earned a victory in its 2010 men's lacrosse opener Saturday afternoon with 7-5 non-league win over Shenandoah.
The Yeomen (1-0) took a 2-0 lead after one, and after the Hornets (0-5) cut the deficit to 3-2 at break, pulled away in the third period.
Oberlin scored four of the six goals of the quarter, including the final two after Shenandoah had tied the game at 4-4 on a Jesse Nichols unassisted goal at 11:13.
After the two teams spent nearly the next six minutes of game time without finding the back of the net, OC got the go-ahead goal on an Erik Strand tally at 5:28.
Just 12 seconds later, Strand fed Dylan Holmes with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Freshman Matt Hendrickson closed the gap to two, 7-5, at 10:42, but the Hornets could get no closer.
The Yeomen outshot SU 40-17 while Shenandoah scooped up 38 groundballs to its hosts' 34.
Oberlin won 9 of 16 faceoffs.
Hornets goalie Andrew Fleischmann was once again strong with 12 saves.
Shenandoah continues non-conference play on Wednesday at 4:00 when it hosts SUNY-Cobleskill.
