Men Dominate PSU-Abington
WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University won its second men's
lacrosse game of the 2009 season Saturday afternoon with a 21-1
non-league victory over Penn State - Abington.
SU (2-0) allowed the Lions no breathing room in their first-ever
contest - Shenandoah scored seven times in the opening stanza and
dominated possession for the entire 60 minutes.
PSU-A scored its first-ever goal at the 11:02 mark of the fourth,
but it was too little, too late.
Shenandoah held an 18-1 lead following this Brett Graeff unassisted
tally and then finished the game on a 3-0 run.
Coach Brian
Jenkins, who saw all 32 of his healthy players see action, had
12 different men register at least one point.
Senior attackman Stephen
Mayor, who had a school-record nine goals in the squad's
season-opening victory on February 27, once again led the way
Saturday.
Mayor led all scorers with five goals and three assists for eight
points despite sitting out most of the second half.
Mayor was particularly effective in the first 15 minutes as he
figured in six of the Hornets first seven goals.
Mayor's classmate, James
Gonzalez, picked up for him in the second half of play.
Gonzalez recorded four of his six points (and three of five goals)
after the break to match Mayor's goal output.
Sophomore Ricky
Jones led the midfield with three assists, added five
groundballs and was 9-of-10 from the faceoff 'x'.
Shenandoah outshot its visitors 52-24, won 19 of 25 face-offs and
grabbed 36 of the game's 61 groundballs.
