Men Win in Overtime

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University kept its men's lacrosse perfect home record intact Saturday afternoon with a 9-8 non-league victory over Oberlin College.

The Hornets (3-1) needed extra time to dispatch the Yeomen after OC (0-2) sent the game into overtime by scoring the final three goals of regulation.

After Jesse Kane provided that game-tying goal by scoring unassisted with just 7.5 seconds remaining on a man-up opportunity.

Oberlin had that EMO because SU sophomore PJ Cooper was whistled for a cross-checking penalty as the Hornets attempted to clear the ball in the waning moments.

With 68 seconds left in the initial OT, Cooper went from possible goat to the hero however, as he swept right and stuck a bounce shot past Yeomen keeper Jon Weisburst for the game-winning goal.

The overtime win is the second for the Hornets against OC in the last three meetings in Winchester. In 2005, SU was a 12-11 overtime victor.

Cooper's tally also spoiled an excellent closing effort by Kane - he figured in his team's final four goals as Oberlin erased a three-goal deficit in the final 7:20.

Cooper's goal also capped a Shenandoah rally from three goals down to start the contest.

The Yeomen took that 3-0 lead by the time the game was barely three minutes old and SU did not get on the board until senior Stephen Mayor scored the first of his team-high four goals at the 10:02 mark of the first.

That goal was a man-up tally, one of seven the Hornets had in 11 EMO chances.

Shenandoah is off until traveling to Gwynedd-Mercy next Saturday for its Colonial States Athletic Conference opener.
