Marywood Sets Pace Against Men's Lax

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Marywood College ruined Shenandoah University's perfect home men's lacrosse record with a 12-4 Colonial States Athletic Conference win Saturday afternoon on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.

Marywood (5-4, 3-0 CSAC) kept itself in contention for a home game at the upcoming CSAC Tournament while the Hornets' (4-4, 1-2) tournament hopes were dealt a serious blow.

The top four teams make the season-ending CSAC Tournament, and now Shenandoah is faced with needing at least two wins in the final three league contests (at Immaculata and hosting both Centenary and Cabrini) along with Gwynedd-Mercy not sweeping Centenary and Neumann.

The Hornets home loss was also the first of the season for the squad. SU had opened the year with non-league victories over Hood, PSU-Abington and Oberlin before dropping this afternoon's contest.

The Pacers jumped out early Saturday afternoon, scoring all three goals of the first period and holding Shenandoah scoreless for the first 22:31 of the game.

Marywood also took advantage by scoring with 1.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter and 3 seconds in the second.

The Pacers took a 5-1 lead into the halftime lockerroom and after scoring an EMO goal with 1:46 to play in the third, held at least a five-goal advantage the remainder of the contest.

George Downey led the victors with four goals with eight of his teammates scoring one goal apiece.

Kevin Totaro had two goals for the Hornets, who were outshot 44-26, lost the groundball battle 46-33 and saw their visitors win 15 of 20 face-offs.

Rodney Mattison was a bright spot for the hosts with 14 saves.
