WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its 2009 men's
lacrosse season with a 13-10 non-league victory over Hood College
Friday night on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
Senior attackman Stephen Mayor, celebrating his return to the
squad after a year's absence, led the Hornets (1-0) with a
school-record-tying nine goals.
Mayor ties the mark originally set by Matt Burton against
Misericordia in 2002 and equalled last year by Richard Michael
against Mount Saint Vincent.
Mayor got SU off to a strong start with two goals in the first 90
seconds before the Blazers roared back with four of the final six
goals of the period make it 4-4 after one.
Shenandoah again pushed ahead by scoring the opening two goals of
the second only to see HC reel off three straight to take a 7-6
lead 7:19 before halftime. Mayor then scored his fourth goal of the
half to send the two teams into halftime tied at 7-7.
Mayor completely dominated the third period - he scored four of
stanza's five goals to give the hosts an insurmountable 11-8
lead.
Hood would cut the deficit to one, 11-10, by scoring the first two
of the fourth but could get no closer.
SU outshot the Blazers 39-36 and got a 19-save performance from
goalkeeper Rodney
Mattison to earn its second straight season-opening
victory.
