Griffins Top Men's Lax

GWYNEDD MERCY, Pa. - Host Gwynedd-Mercy won its first-ever Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game with a 10-8 victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins (5-3, 1-0 CSAC) won despite a record-setting day for Hornets (3-2, 0-1) senior Stephen Mayor.

Mayor registered six goals on the day, and his last was both the 150th of his career and also his 192nd career point. This latter total passes Chris Keller '03 for the all-time record at Shenandoah.

GMC scored three of the game's first four goals and led 6-5 at halftime but found itself trailing as the final 15 minutes started.

Mayor capped off a 6-1 SU run with a goal off of a Ricky Jones assist at the 5:03 mark of the third to give Shenandoah its first lead of the contest.

The two teams then traded a pair of goals to complete the period, giving SU an 8-7 advantage heading into the fourth.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, Gwynedd-Mercy scored the only three goals of the stanza to secure the victory.

Nicholas Coan scored what proved to be the game-winner with his conversion of a Nicholas Hummel feed with 2:57 to play.

Shenandoah was held without a shot following Coan's goal and GMC got an insurance tally at 1:59.

In addition to Mayor's six goals, PJ Cooper added three points on a goal and two assists.

SU goalie Rodney Mattison had 15 saves.
