GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University men's golf team stands 19th Monday afternoon after day one of The O'Briant-Jensen Tournament hosted by Guilford College.

Playing at the par-71, 6822-yard Dye Course at Sedgefield CC, the Hornets shot 323 to find themselves one shot back of 18th place Averett. SU is just two back of Randolph-Macon and Emory & Henry, who are tied for 16th with a 321.

Shenandoah is six strokes in front of 20th place Roanoke.

Methodist University leads with a collective 290. The Monarchs are two shots in front of Huntingdon and six clear of tournament host Guilford.

Freshman Joseph Gesell led the Hornets with a one-over-par 72. The frosh had four birdies and five bogies in his round – he shot one-under 34 on the front thanks to birdies at the par-4 first, par-4 third and par-3 eighth holes.

Doc Schulte had eight-over 79, Blake Woodie 83 and Brett Dubin 89 to round out the SU scoring players.

Josh Bianco had a 90 that did not count toward the team score.

Gesell is tied for fifth in the tourney.

Junior Connor McCarthy, playing as an individual, is tied for ninth overall after shooting a two-over 73. McCarthy had a remarkably steady round, recording 14 pars along with one birdie and three bogies.

The tournament concludes Tuesday.
