Men's Golf Strong at Greene Turtle Invitational

WINCHESTER, Va. – Both Shenandoah University men's golf squads posted top 12 showings Sunday in the opening round of the Greene Turtle Invitational.

Hosting its own invite at the par-71, 6367-yard Winchester Country Club, Shenandoah entered both 'A' and 'B' teams in the two-day, 36-hole event.

The 'A' team of Blake Forst, Doc Schulte, Brett Dubin, Erich Gall and Robert Fox is sixth with a 312 with the 'B' squad 12th after shooting a collective 321.

Connor McCarthy, Josh Bianco, Blake Woodie, Joe Gesell and Trevor Gardner make up the 'B' squad.

Michael Plath, J.R. Mills and Anthony Crescienzi round out the SU players competing by playing as individuals. Plath shot 82, Mills 85 and Crescienzi 98.

Hampden-Sydney leads after day one with a four-over-par 288. The Tigers have a 12-shot lead over Mary Washington.

The Hornets 'A' squad is sixth, one stroke back of fifth place Ferrum and one in front of seventh place Bridgewater.

Forst led this group with a two-over 73 and Schulte carded a 74. Forst is tied for sixth and Schulte tied for ninth. Dubin had an 80 and Gall and 85 to complete the 'A' score.

The SU 'B' squad is 16 shots in front of Eastern Mennonite and just three back of No. 11 UVA-Wise.

McCarthy and Bianco both shot 79 for the 'B' squad with Gesell posting an 80 and Woodie an 83.

Fox had a 95 and Gardner an 86 for the 'A' and 'B', respectively, that did not count toward the team total.

Hampden-Sydney's Allen Smith leads the tournament after shooting a six-under-par 65.

The tournament concludes Monday with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
