BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – Shenandoah University opened up its 2012-13 men's basketball season Friday night with a 79-54 exhibition loss to Division II West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Bobcats (1-0) took a 10-point, 30-20, lead into the halftime lockerroom and then pulled away from SU with a barrage of 3-pointers in the second stanza.
WVWC hit nine '3's in the second on its way to a 49-point half. Six different players connected on shots from behind the arc including four from Soren Dossing and three by Noah Cottrill.
Cottrill, who also led all players with 22 points, was 11 of 12 from the line.
Coach Rob Pryor's club missed eight of nine attempts from the line in the opening half.
SU shot 20 of 62 (32.3 percent) for the game but was also hurt by a 50-28 deficit on the boards. The Bobcats grabbed 40 of the Hornets' 50 misses on the night.
In addition to 17 from Carithers, Bedford and Almulla each had 11. Almulla was tops on the boards with six.
Shenandoah officially opens its season on Thursday evening by hosting Patrick Henry in the second game of the 2012 BB&T Tip-Off Classic. The game is the second half of a first round that features Goucher (Md.) versus Centenary (La.) at 7:00.
