WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University basketball coaches Michelle Guyant-Holloway and Robert Trent Harris, Jr. announced Friday their respective schedules for the 2009-10 season.
Harris, in his 10th year as the Hornets head coach, will have 12 home games this winter while Guyant-Holloway's club will welcome 11 different schools into Shingleton Gymnasium in 2009-10.
The SU men tip-off the 2009-10 campaign on November 7 with an exhibition at DII Shippensburg. This is the third straight year that the Hornets have taken on the Red Raiders and the second straight year that the contest has been the season opener.
The home slate begins nine days later with a non-league contest against Frostburg State; the Bobcats are one of five non-league teams that will visit Winchester in 2009-10. Four of the five other opponents - Southern Virginia, Stevenson, Marymount and Trine (Ind.) - are new opponents this season. The matchup with Trine is the first in school history and the game against Marymount will be the first for SU since Harris took over for the 2000-01 season.
Southern Virginia makes its first appearance on the schedule since December 8, 2006 while Shenandoah hasn't faced Stevenson since the 2001-02 season when the Owings Mills, Md. school was known as Villa Julie College.
The final non-league opponent is Lycoming on December 30 and this game is the fourth game of a five-game homestand that encompasses the semester break.
Harris' club will also participate in the third annual South Region Challenge on November 28 and 29. Hampden-Sydney hosts the 2009 edition of the classic format tournament and SU will face the host Tigers after opening against Mary Washington.
Christopher Newport kicks of the USA South Conference portion of the schedule on January 6 and the Captains will once again host the league tournament the last weekend in February.
Guyant-Holloway, who is entering her fourth year as the women's head coach, has her squad playing in a season-opening tournament at Susquehanna University November 21 and 22 and the Elizabethtown Tournament December 11 and 12. Misericordia (Pa.) is the Hornets opening round opponent at Susquehanna while a matchup against Wilkes (Pa.) awaits at Elizabethtown.
The Susquehanna Tournament is just two of four games that the team will play before hosting Methodist and Greensboro in a pair of USA South Conference contests on December 5 and 6 - this is the second straight season that the league has held a portion of its 18-game conference slate in the fall semester.
Perennial power Mary Washington visits on November 24 before SU plays its first true road contest on November 29 at St. Mary's of Maryland.
Guyant-Holloway's club hosts Eastern Mennonite in the final non-league game of the season on December 19. Following this contest, Shenandoah will have 16 USA South Conference contests remaining.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone game will be February 13 against Averett. This contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
The 2010 USA South Conference Women's Tournament begins on February 23 with quarterfinal round games on campus sites.
