Men Advance to Semi-Finals

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team advanced to the USA South Conference Tournament semi-finals for the first time in three years after downing fifth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan 83-77 Tuesday night.

Shenandoah (10-16) will meet top-seeded Christopher Newport in the final game of the night on Friday at CNU's Freeman Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00.

With the Bishops (14-12) leading 70-61 following a pair of Trey Drake free throws with 8:10 remaining, the Hornets seized control of the game by scoring 12 of the game's next 14 points.

The final points in this run, a Wayne Washington jumper at 4:15, came after SU grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds on the possession.

Wesleyan tied the game 29 seconds later when Buddy Williams hit one of two free throws, but Kevin Kline answered with two free throws of his own one minute later and the hosts never trailed again.

The lead reached five points by the two-minute mark before the Bishops made things interesting with a Drake jumper followed by a steal and a lay-in by Jarmel Arrington.

Now leading by just one, 78-77, Shenandoah hit five of its final six from the line to clinch the victory.

Junior Chris Schrader led the victors with a career-high 28 points, Kline added 16 points and Kenny Robertson 15.

Arrington paced NCWC with 19 points.
