Golf Wraps Up at State DIII Championships

DANVILLE, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its play at the 2012 Virginia State Division III Championships Sunday afternoon by finishing ninth in the annual tournament.

A day after shooting 315, the Hornets improved by four strokes on day two over the par-70, 6235-yard Danville CC layout.

The 626 two-day total put SU ninth in the 11-team event, but just two strokes from a tie for sixth.

Shenandoah was one stroke behind fellow ODAC member Virginia Wesleyan and two back of league opponents Lynchburg and Roanoke.

Averett, with a 585 total, won the tournament by 13 strokes over Bridgewater.

Junior John Judy was the Hornets medalist, carding a two-over-par 72 on Sunday for a 148 total that was good for a tie for seventh place in the 60-man field.

Freshman Cory Hammons had his second straight 77 to finish tied for 23rd.

SU completes its fall season next weekend with its participation at the Ted Keller Memorial hosted by Randolph-Macon College at Hunting Hawk GC outside of Richmond.
