Five Earn VaSID Hockey Honors

FERRUM, Va. - Five members of the Shenandoah University field hockey program have earned VaSID All-State honors in selections announced recently by the organization.

Head Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft leads this group as she was named as the VaSID Coach of the Year for college division field hockey.

Freshman Taylor Hayes was named to the first team at midfield with junior Elizabeth Pardo and sophomores Kayla Alderman and Morgan Payne named second team All-State.

Hayes and Pardo were named as midfielders, Alderman at forward and Payne as a defender.

Smeltzer-Kraft, who was also named ODAC Coach of the Year, earned the honor after leading Shenandoah to its first-ever ODAC championship this past fall.

For Smeltzer-Kraft, it is the second time in four seasons that she has been named as the league's Coach of the Year. She earned her initial honor in 2013 after leading SU to 10 wins in her first season at the helm of the program.

All four players were also previously named to All-ODAC and to the ODAC All-Tournament team after leading the Hornets to their first-ever championship. Pardo was a first team All-ODAC honoree and Hayes was named as the league's Rookie of the Year.

Pardo, who earned All-ODAC honors last season, had two goals and five assists for nine points this year as a midfielder.

Alderman and Hayes contributed 14 and 26 points for SU, respectively, this season. Alderman had six goals and two assists for 14 points while Hayes chipped in eight goals and a team-high 10 assists for 26 points.

Payne, a defender who comes down to insert penalty corners on offense, led the Hornets with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points. She had a natural hat trick in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinal round win over Virginia Wesleyan, assisted on the game-winning goal versus Lynchburg in the semi-finals and then had the game-winner in the championship versus Washington and Lee.
