INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team has learned its destination for its opening game in the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament in selections announced late Sunday night by the NCAA.
Shenandoah (13-8) will travel to Liberty League runner-up Rochester (17-4) for a Wednesday first round game. SU and UR will meet at 3 p.m. in Edwin Fauver Stadium on Rochester's campus.
The winner of Wednesday's game faces Middlebury in a neutral site game at Messiah College for round of 16 contest with the NESCAC runner-up Panthers.
The Yellowjackets, ranked fifteenth in the latest NFHCA poll, fell 2-1 to No. 17 Skidmore Saturday afternoon in the LL championship. Rochester enters the NCAA Tournament as a Pool C (at-large) selection.
Shenandoah qualified for its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance by earning the Pool A (conference champions) berth from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. SU, the fourth seed in the ODAC Tournament, won the title by defeating fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan, top-seeded Lynchburg and third-seeded Washington and Lee on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Shenandoah and Rochester have one common opponent – St. Mary's (Md.) - this season. UR defeated the Seahawks 2-1 in overtime on September 4 in a neutral site game at the University of Mary Washington while SU took out SMCM 3-0 in St. Mary's City on September 21.
