WINCHESTER, Va. - Sophomore Morgan Payne is in her first year of blogging about the field hockey program, and in her first post, she recaps the preseason ahead of the squad's opener tomorrow versus Hood.
…And we're back in action. We took to the field at 6 a.m. Wednesday, August 17 to start our preseason. With eight new and insanely talented freshmen, alongside our 16 returners, we set the tone for the season by crushing the fitness test!
Though preseason was short, hot, and challenging, we all brought out intensity, effort, and energy the entire time (well, except for ½ of a practice… Sorry, Coach).
We capped off our successful preseason with a scrimmage Friday at Juniata College. We used the first half of the game to shake off the nerves, especially for our younger players, and by the second half we pieced our passes together, forced more shots on goal, and improved defensively. We played an entire game along with 10 minutes of extra play, 10 minutes of 7v7, and two rounds of 8-second shootouts in which our offense and goalies dominated. Needless to say, we were all rolling out and enjoying ice baths the following morning.
We open our season at home tomorrow at 4 p.m. versus Hood before hitting the road Saturday for a 5 p.m. game at Washington and Jefferson. This season holds the potential for so many successes and based on our preseason performance, attitudes, and commitment, we can make this season the most successful ever for us!
