ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Shenandoah University completed its non-conference field hockey slate Thursday afternoon with a 3-2 victory at St. Mary's of Maryland.
The Hornets (8-6) also clinched at least a .500 regular season record with the win over the Seahawks (6-5).
SMCM had the opening goal of the game, scoring just 52 seconds in, before SU answered with three goals in a span of 6:11.
Senior Amber VanHorn had the first two of those tallies, finishing off a pair of feeds from Alexandra Darrow on penalty corners.
At 19:53, just 32 seconds after VanHorn had given Shenandoah a 2-1 lead, Darrow scored unassisted with what proved to be the game-winner.
SU held that two-goal advantage until the 'Hawks closed the book on the day's scoring with 17 seconds remaining.
St. Mary's outshot the Hornets 18-7 and held a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Freshman Kaitlyn Gregory had four saves to earn the win in her first collegiate start.
The Hornets host Roanoke on Sunday at noon in an ODAC contest. This game is also Senior Day for the program.
