Brandon's Huddle Buzz

WINCHESTER, Va. - Welcome to the newest www.suhornets.com feature series - 'Brandon's Huddle Buzz'. Each Friday, senior defensive back Brandon Martin will blog about his experiences with the SU football team.

Ed. Note: Brandon started all 10 games last season at cornerback and posted 27 tackles, three interceptions, seven passes defensed and had one fumble recovery. The senior mass communications major has also written numerous feature stories for www.suhornets.com.

Blog Post No. 1 - The Beginning of Change

Adversity is something we all face on a day-to-day basis. As individuals we are defined by the way we handle adverse situations. This year in camp, we as a team are facing a lot of changes that can either make us, or break us. From potential starters not returning to coaches leaving for other jobs, not to mention our head coach being out due to back surgery and a new conference, our 2012 team has already faced significant adversity.

Ed. Note: Brandon's position coach for the past two seasons, Tyrone Bell, left SU in June to take a high school head coaching position in southern Maryland. The Hornets head coach, Paul Barnes, is currently away from practice after undergoing back surgery last week.

As a group we cannot let these changes distract us from our one common overall goal, winning football games. Due to the adversity that we are facing I feel like the upperclassmen have to bring this team together. We have to help bring along the underclassmen and at the same time adjust to the new situations.

We also have to make Coach Barnes' return as easy as possible so he knows that he is still has the support of the team. Coach Brock McCullough is doing an outstanding job as the interim head coach.

So far, camp is going very well. We are working harder than we have the past two years I have been on the team. Yesterday we got to go full pads and go all out for the first time this season. There is nothing like hearing the crack of shoulder pads and helmets to get the team energized and fired up.

That's all for this week - next week I will recap our first full week in pads, media day and our intrasquad scrimmage. Until then, Go Hornets!
