Three Named All-State

ROANOKE, Va. - Shenandoah University had three football players earn All-State honors in selections announced Tuesday by the Roanoke Times.

Seniors Rico Wallace and James English were named first team All-State on offense while sophomore Byron Mitchell earned second team All-State honors on defense.

All three men previously were named first team All-USA South this fall with Wallace and English both earning All-Region honors from D3football.com.

Mitchell joined English in earning first team All-State accolades from the Virginia State Sports Information Directors Association earlier this month.

Wallace, a wide receiver, led the Hornets to a 6-4 record this season with 67 catches for 1241 yards and 14 touchdowns.

All three marks are new school season records.

English, an offensive lineman, helped SU to lead the USA South in scoring offense this season with 326 points in the 10-game schedule.

Shenandoah averaged 376.3 yards in offense per outing.

Mitchell led the Hornets in solo tackles this year with 53 and his 79 total tackles was second-best on the squad.

He also led the team in interceptions with four and was named as the USA South Conference defensive Player of the Week on one occasion.

SU opens the 2012 season, its first in the ODAC, on September 1 at Stevenson.
