FERRUM, Va. - Shenandoah University had five football players earn All-State honors in selections announced recently by the Virginia State Sports Information Directors.
The Hornets, fresh off of a 6-4 season that included a 5-2 mark in the USA South, had four players earn first team VaSID accolades.
Senior James English and junior Jake Brent were named to the first team on the offensive side of the ball with sophomores Josh Rogers and Byron Mitchell garnering first team defensive honors.
English and Brent are both offensive linemen - English a guard and Brent a tackle - while Rogers plays inside linebacker and Mitchell at free safety.
All four men previously were named first team All-USA South with English, Brent and Rogers also picking up D3football.com All-Region honors.
Rogers and Mitchell are both two-year starters and combined for 166 tackles and five interceptions this past fall.
Rogers led the team with 87 total tackles while contributing 14.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one interception and three forced fumbles.
Mitchell had a team-highs in solo tackles, 53, and interceptions, four.
He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and as the USA South Conference defensive Player of the Week one time each this season.
Brent and English helped anchor an offensive line that helped SU to 3763 yards in total offense this season and 32.6 points per outing.
The Hornets led the USA South in scoring offense in 2011.
Senior wide receiver Rico Wallace rounded out the selections with a second team pick. VaSID only selects one wide receiver per team.
Shenandoah opens up its 2012 campaign on September 1 at Stevenson.
