Ferrum Runs Past Football

WINCHESTER, Va. - League leading Ferrum College rolled up over 400 yards in total offense Sunday afternoon in a 41-28 USA South Conference football victory over Shenandoah.

Ferrum (6-2, 5-0 USA South) maintained its position at the top of the USA South standings with the win over SU (4-4, 3-2).

The first-ever Sunday contest in Shenandoah history was needed because of a snowstorm that hit the northern Shenandoah Valley early Saturday morning. The Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf was made unplayable by the storm and the field had to be plowed in order to get the game in Sunday afternoon.

Ferrum remains tied for first in the league with Christopher Newport and hosts the Captains this coming Saturday in a game that will decide the league title.

FC had 314 of its 415 yards in total offense on the ground as quarterback Marcus Mayo and halfback Steven Harris both rushed for at least 135 yards.

Mayo had 142 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries with Harris adding 135 and two TDs on just 11 touches.

Mayo broke open a 14-7 game with a 70-yard TD run around right end at the 7:17 mark of the second that effectively sealed the contest for the visitors.

This scamper also started a run of 27 unanswered points for the Panthers.

SU scored the final three TDs of the game, the last on a Daniel Wright 1-yard QB sneak with 1:22 remaining, but could not recover the ensuing onside kick and Ferrum ran out the clock.

Wright got the late game run started by hooking up with senior classmate Kyle Feldman on a 14-yard TD strike with 1:52 left in the third before sophomore Byron Mitchell scored his first-ever touchdown with a pick-six at the 12:09 mark of the fourth.

Wright's 1-yard sneak was his second of the game - he had made it 14-7 by capping a 10-play, 63-yard drive with a 1-yard run 50 seconds into the second quarter.

Ferrum outgained the Hornets 415-301, including 314 to 69 on the ground.

Wright led the Shenandoah offense with a 23 for 45, 232-yard passing day that included the TD pass to Feldman and three interceptions.

Mitchell had 10 tackles (six solo) to lead the defense.

SU begins a two-game road trip to complete the season with a 1:00 game at Averett on Saturday.
