NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team is the No. 4 pre-season pick of the USA South Conference football coaches in selections announced Monday by the league office.
The Hornets, who are coming off a 4-6 season that included a 4-3, tied for third finish in USA South play, have 29 points in the poll to come in three points ahead of Averett and five points behind No. 3 selection Ferrum.
Points were awarded on a 1-7 basis and teams could not vote for themselves in the poll.
SU has a league-high 17 starters returning, including nine on defense.
"We are picked about where I thought we would be," Barnes said. "Every game is going to be a battle and I think the league is wide open this year."
This is Shenandoah's final season in the USA South before joining the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the 2012 season.
SU opens the year with a September 3 non-conference game against Stevenson and opens conference play on October 1 with a 7 p.m. home contest against Greensboro.
