Pendergraft Named Player of the Year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Jake Pendergraft '12 has been named the Virginia State Sports Information Directors Player of the Year in selections announced Tuesday by the organization.

Pendergraft, a third team ABCA All-America, was one of five SU players to earn All-State honors.

Cory Nelson '12 and rising senior Nick Beall join Pendergraft on the first team while Joey Donofrio and Matt Riegler earned second team accolades.

Pendergraft, an outfielder who was named as an ABCA All-America, led the Hornets with a .423 batting average this past spring.

His 47 RBI was also tops on the squad and he finished second in both doubles and home runs.

In addition to his All-America honors, Pendergraft was named first team All-South Region and first team All-USA South.

Nelson was named to the first team at utility and Beall at designated hitter.

Both men previously earned All-USA South and All-South Region accolades.

Donofrio was an All-South selection in the outfield prior to earning VaSID honors while Riegler was named as the USA South Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

Shenandoah opens its 2013 season, its first in the ODAC, in mid-February.
