INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Shenandoah University baseball team has earned its fourth straight bid into the NCAA Tournament in selections announced Monday morning by the NCAA.
The Hornets earned a Pool C (at-large) bid into the tourney and are the No. 3 seed at the Newport News Regional.
Shenandoah opens play at the tournament on Wednesday against No. 4 Rowan (N.J.). This will be the first-ever meeting between SU and the Profs in baseball but the third time that the two schools have met in NCAA play.
In 2011, the SU softball team split a pair with Rowan at the Salisbury Regional while the Hornets women's soccer team fell in overtime to Rowan last fall in the first round of the NCAA Tourney.
Host Christopher Newport is the top-seed in the regional, followed by Salisbury. Future ODAC rival Lynchburg and MAC champion Messiah round out the six-team regional as the Nos. 5 and 6 seeds, respectively.
Shenandoah has a 3-4 record against teams in the Newport News Regional, winning one of three versus CNU, splitting with Lynchburg and defeating Messiah.
SU was also scheduled to play Salisbury this past season, but that contest was cancelled due to a shift in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament schedule.
The winner of the regional advances to the NCAA National Championships in Appleton, Wis. May 25-29. Shenandoah is seeking its third Appleton appearance in the past four years.
