Baseball Falls in Championship

BURLINGTON, N.C. – No. 2/2 Christopher Newport University claimed its second straight USA South Conference Baseball Championship with a 7-4 victory over No. 12/18 Shenandoah University Sunday afternoon.

It is the third straight year that the two teams have met for the championship.

For the third time in four games this season between the two schools, CNU (29-6) rallied from at least a two-run deficit to down the Hornets (26-10).

Shenandoah started off with two runs in the first and another in the second before Christopher Newport began to chip away at the lead.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the eighth, the Captains touched SU reliever Kyle Scallion (0-2) for three runs on four hits.

Steven Keener and Chris McDougal had RBI hits in the frame, with Keener's double to center giving CNU a 5-4 lead.

In the ninth, Captains closer Ryan Fleischmann had a pop out, a fly out and a comebacker to post his ninth save.

The Hornets had taken the early advantage thanks to two walks, two wild pitches, a Corbin Lucas sacrifice fly and a Cory Nelson infield single in the first.

Lucas had another sacrifice fly to center in the second to put Shenandoah up 3-0.

Coach Kevin Anderson's club scored its final run in the sixth on a steal-stop with Mike Minch at third and Joey Donofrio at first.

SU, which is still alive for a Pool C berth into the NCAA Tournament, hosts Messiah on Tuesday at 4:00 in its next contest.

Notes: Nelson (1B), Minch (2B) and Nick Beall (DH) were named All-Tournament.
