Baseball Drops Heartbreaker

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - No. 23/RV Shenandoah University saw its six-game baseball winning streak come to an end Sunday with a 2-1 extra inning USA South loss at N.C. Wesleyan.

Catcher Tyler Clark played the hero for N.C. Wesleyan (11-13, 2-4 USA South) as he drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th to give the Bishops the comeback victory over SU (11-5, 4-2).

Senior Cory Nelson (1-3) was one out away from his second straight shutout on the mound (and the team's third straight in conference play) when Clark tied the game on an infield single.

Andre Nichols scored that game-tying run when he led reached on a hit by pitch, advanced to second on a single and to third on a fielder's choice before coming home on Clark's single to short.

NCWC needed that rally as the Hornets took the lead in the top of the first on a Kurt Krout walk followed by a hit by pitch, a flyout and a Nick Beall single to right.

The Hornets had runners in scoring position in the sixth, ninth, 10th and 11th innings but could push across an insurance runs.

Beall led the offense with two hits.

Nelson allowed two runs on six hits and one walk in 10 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out two in the second longest pitching performance in school history.

Jake Swarthout (2-1) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Shenandoah hosts PSU-Altoona on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
