WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University baseball coaches Kevin Anderson announced Wednesday a class of 19 student-athletes who are coming into the program this fall.
Anderson, who is preparing for his ninth season at the helm of the Hornets program, welcomes the 19 students into his program to go along with 42 returnees.
These 19 players join a program seeking a fourth straight bid to the NCAA regionals in 2012.
The class has 10 players from Virginia, five from Maryland and one each from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Two of the players: Zach Carney and Nolan Potts, are from the Winchester/Frederick County community. Carney comes to SU after attending the University of Virginia last year after graduating from Sherando High School while Potts is a Handley H.S. product.
Carney is also one of two transfers in the class. Thomas Arens, from Purcellville, played collegiately at Hagerstown (Md.) CC.
Carney earned first team All-Northwestern District honors and was the Northwestern District Player of the Year as a high school senior in 2010.
Danny Freshley, from Montgomery Village, Maryland, is a two-time Baseball Factory/Under Armour Pre-Season All-American and earned numerous all-league accolades in his career.
Freshley leaves Gaithersburg H.S. fifth all-time in doubles and eighth in RBI.
"Our recruiting philosophy is to recruit players based on character, intelligence, attitude and athletic ability," Anderson said. "(Lead Assistant) Bruce Cameron and David Jenkins have worked very hard to bring in the type of players that will fit into our program.
"In the last three years we have had a lot of very good baseball players graduate from our program. In order for us to maintain the level of success that we have had, the young men in this recruiting class will need to step in and perform ata high level. We look forward to working with them on a daily basis this fall."
Twelve of the 19 recruited student-athletes earned at least one district or all-league honor in their respective high school careers.
The 2012 season is scheduled to open on February 17 against longtime Division III power Cortland (N.Y.) State. SU defeated the Red Dragons 2-0 this past season in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
