Baseball Shuts Out Little Giants

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - No. 3/4 Shenandoah University opened the Millington Regional Wednesday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over NCAC champion Wabash (Ind.).

Shenandoah (35-5) banged out 10 hits and got a complete game performance from senior All-America Greg Van Sickler (11-1) to advance into the second round against the winner of the Piedmont (Ga.)/Salisbury contest.

SU will face either the Lions or Sea Gulls at 7 p.m. CST on Thursday night at USA Stadium in Millington.

The Hornets scored one run in the second to give Van Sickler all the offense he would need on the afternoon.

Van Sickler scattered struck out nine, walked one and allowed nine hits in registering his third shutout and third complete game of the season.

He retired the Little Giants (21-21) in order in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Sophomore catcher Keaton Neeb scored what proved to be the game-winning run by leading off the second with a single and advancing to second on error. Junior Mike Minch then drove in Neeb with a single to right.

Shenandoah scored three more times in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double from Van Sickler, to coast home to the victory.

Neeb led all players with a 4 for 4 afternoon.
