Baseball Announces 2011 Slate
WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Head Baseball Coach Kevin Anderson announced Thursday morning the path his team will take in attempting to earn a third straight trip to Appleton, Wisconsin and the NCAA National Championships.
Anderson currently has 39 of his 40-game allotment scheduled and is in discussions with two teams (both 2010 NCAA National Championships participants) to fill the final date.
SU has 19 home games scheduled for this spring at Bridgeforth Field, including a matchups with fellow Fayetteville Regional participants Salisbury and Bridgewater on March 15 and 17, respectively.
In addition to the six USA South Conference games (versus N.C. Wesleyan, Methodist and Averett), the Hornets will also host traditional powers Elizabethtown, Randolph-Macon, Virginia Wesleyan, Ithaca (N.Y.) and Wesley.
The Randolph-Macon game is part of a home-and-home with the Yellow Jackets and R-MC is one of nine games the squad will have against ODAC opponents. The Hornets will play both Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite home-and-home while traveling to Lynchburg and Washington & Lee.
The March 26 contest against Ithaca will be the first-ever game against the Bombers.
Anderson's club opens the 2011 season on February 12 and 13 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. against Bates (Maine) and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. For the second straight season, SU will face both of those schools in a pair of weekend doubleheaders at the Ripken Complex.
The home slate is scheduled to open with a non-league doubleheader on February 19 against Misericordia University.
Dickinson, Messiah, St. Mary's, Stevenson and Frostburg State round out the non-league slate.
"I think this is a good schedule for us," Anderson said. "We have a number of tough mid-week games and we are going to need to be successful in those contests if we intend on being prepared for our league games.
"Obviously, our goal is to repeat as conference and regional champions. This schedule is set to prepare us for that difficult task. There are a number of excellent teams in our region and we need to be prepared to play each time out."
