Hornets in the Valley Wrap-Up
WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team had four players spend the summer in the Valley League in 2009, and one came away with a championship.
Scott Van Dusseldorp, a rising senior for the 2010 Hornets, was part of a Haymarket Senators ballclub that claimed the 2009 Valley League Lineweaver Cup on Wednesday night with a 6-1 win over Covington in game four of the best-of-five series.
Van Dusseldorp (Valley Stats) joined the Senators eight games into the season and ended the year with a .308 average in 32 games. In the championship series clinching win over the Lumberjacks, Van Dusseldorp had one hit and drove in a run.
Kevin Brashears, Jesse Henry and Greg Van Sickler all spent their summer with the Front Royal Cardinals and helped the Cards to a Valley-best 29 regular season wins.
Van Sickler (Valley Stats) was a two-way star, winning five
games on the mound and hitting .373 at the plate. He was selected
to both the Valley League All-Star game and to the Valley League
All-Star team that took on an All-Star team from the Cal Ripken Sr.
Collegiate Baseball League.
Van Sickler led the VBL with just 10 walks in 57.0 innings pitched.
Henry (Valley Stats) rebounded from a slow start caused by injury to finish the summer with a .299 batting average. He was named as the North Division Player of the Week in the middle of July and saw action at all four infield positions.
Brashears (Valley Stats) played in 39 of the team's 47 games as
an outfielder and had three
doubles among his 19 hits. He also was a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen
bases and had a .966 fielding percentage.
All four men are set to lead the SU baseball team in its defense of the 2009 South Region Championship beginning at the end of February with three games in Greensboro, N.C. as part of the USA South/ODAC Challenge.
