Baseball Adds Nineteen

WINCHESTER, Va. - Head Baseball Coach Kevin Anderson announced Tuesday that 19 new student-athletes have elected to join the Hornets program for the 2009-10 school year.

Anderson, who will welcome back 41 players back (including All-American Greg Van Sickler and South Regional MOP Kevin Brashears) to his South Region championship team, has brought in 13 players from Virginia and two each from Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York.

Sixteen of the 19 are freshmen and three (two sophomores and one junior) are transfers. Twelve are slated to at least spend some time on the mound with three playing corner infield positions and two serving their time behind the plate.

"I am very proud of the job that Bruce (Cameron, Anderson's full-time assistant) and the rest of the staff did in bringing in this class," Anderson said.

"It was different for us this year because we were playing the entire month of May. Normally, that is a big time for us to be on the road, but our success kept us on the diamond. We had to be very efficient in going out to see players.

"This is an excellent class but they have a high standard to live up to. Our guys have a great work ethic and they expect nothing less from our newcomers."

Shenandoah is scheduled to open its 2010 season on February 12 against Roanoke in the first of three games of the ODAC/USA South Challenge.
