Five Earn Departmental Awards
WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University honored five senior student-athletes with major awards Monday evening at its annual Senior Dinner in the Ferrari Room of the Brandt Student Center.
The annual event features a dinner prior to each senior student-athlete receiving their senior blanket. This year, 53 seniors received blankets in recognition of their participation in intercollegiate athletics and cheerleading; five of these student-athletes participated in more than one sport during their time at SU.
In addition to the blankets, five awards: Male and Female Senior Athlete of the Year, Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year and the Athletic Directors award, were announced.
The award winners were nominated by their respective coaches and then voted on by the head coaches and senior administrative personnel in the department.
Scott Van Dusseldorp was selected as the Senior Male Athlete of the Year after being named as the 2010 USA South Conference baseball Player of the Year. Van Dusseldorp hit over .400 in league play this season and has led the baseball team to a No. 7 national ranking and a USA South Conference championship.
Jake Yocum gave baseball a second honoree with his selection as the Senior Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Nominees in this category need to carry at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be starters or important reserves on their teams.
Yocum is 6-0 on the mound this spring for the baseball team with two of those wins coming in the USA South Conference Tournament two weeks ago. That performance earned Yocum a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Yocum is a 3.67 student as a Criminal Justice major.
The female honorees for these two categories come from the women's basketball program.
Katherine Flint was selected as the Senior Female Athlete of the Year and Alexis Hargbol as the Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Flint led the Hornets in scoring and assists this season as she earned second team All-USA South honors and a spot on the Elizabethtown All-Tournament team. Flint also became the 16th member of the women's basketball 1000-point club with her final point in a blowout victory over N.C. Wesleyan on Groundhog Day.
Flint was beaten to the 1000-point mark by Hargbol, who hit it in a win over Wilkes (Pa.) in the first round of that Elizabethtown Tournament in December.
On the season, Hargbol led the team in rebounding, was second in scoring and was named to both the Elizabethtown and Susquehanna All-Tournament teams as well as earning All-USA South honors for the third time in her career.
Hargbol, who has a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Doctor of Pharmacy student, was named as the league's Player of the Week two times this season.

This award, the Athletic Director's Award, encompasses academics, athletics and service and is given out for the first time this year. Hoover was a three-year starter for SU, earned USA South All-Academic honors the past two years and was very involved in the team's public service initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity.
